Basic duct design is the key component of installation of a heating and cooling forced air system. The amount of air delivered to a conditioned space is simply the most important factor of any forced air system and this is done through careful design Including but not limitted to:
1) Properly sized filter and Return ducts from all spaces requiring returns.
2) Properly sized Run outs to the supply registers.
3) Properly sized and selected registers and diffusers.
4) Properly sized Trunk ducts and take off placement. The point at which each supply duct leaves the trunk duct.
5) Balance damper placement and balancing of the entire system.
Return ducts can also be balanced but are usually only done on the very hi end and more meticulously installed systems.
6) Properly installed and insulated ducts are sealed tight allowing air to only be delivered to the space being conditioned.
Note, even in a house with a basement the duct leakage can result in undesired heating of spaces not needed.
Any attic duct system should have every joint sealed and be watertight insulated with an R-8 or better. The insulation should be sealed vapor tight as well. All the surfaces should be insulated with the full R-8 or better thickness. Spots where the insulation is not full thickness can result in sweating of those ducts and heat loss. Spray on foam insulation over the entire assembly is in my opinion the most effective insulation and vapor seal method and most energy efficient.
